We went to Roosevelt for Memorial Day weekend (and to also meet Bo's new girlfriend) and came home with chickens! Dayton and I have been wanting chickens for a while, but have worried about our location and so many predators around. We thought we would be able to make it work and we mentioned this to Dayton's parents while we were in Roosevelt. It must have been fate because the very next day one of their chickens had 7 baby chicks! We successfully (thanks to brave Dayton) got the chicks from the Hen, when we decided, why not bring the Mama along too? She apparently had been ostracized from the rest of the chickens so we packed them up and brought them up. The only problem was, we didn't have a chicken coop or anything. We put them up in a dog kennel and Dayton went to work! He spent all of his spare time building a palace of chicken coops- even sacrificed his last week of turkey hunting.
This mama is like no other- she is fierce and protective and kind of crazy. HAHA. We named her Mini- after the character in the book, "The Help." If you have read it, you understand her attitude completely. Chicken Coop Day 1
Helpers.
After one week, we have the cutest coop around. It can house up to 35 chickens!
It now has an automatic door and solar panels. How spoiled are they?
